Alberto Bona announces the name of the co-skipper for the Normandy Channel Race: it’s Alberto Riva

31 July 2024

Alberto Riva – the Italian skipper involved in the dramatic shipwreck during the Transat Québec Saint-Malo – will be Alberto’s co-skipper for the Normandy Channel Race, the last regatta of the third season of the project Sailing into the Future. Together, which will take place in September.

Bona had invited Alberto to board the Class40 IBSA, and – before the start of the Transat Québec Saint-Malothe two ocean sailors had agreed to race together aboard Acrobatica on the occasion of the Med Max, the first Mediterranean regatta for Class40s, but the shipwreck changed their plans. “I should have boarded Acrobatica at the end of September”, said Bona. “Now, instead, it will be Alberto who will board the Class40 IBSA for the Normandy and I am very happy that he accepted my proposal. I think that it is essential for him to go back to sailing as soon as possible and accept new challenges”.

A choice by the two sailors which highlights how, in the world of ocean sailing, skippers – despite being adversaries on the regatta field – belong to a solid sporting community, which shares a strong spirit of solidarity.
